6 Factors That Can Secretly Dehydrate You
Dehydration is one tricky issue because you don't always feel it. You see, you could be mildly dehydrated and not really know what the cause of your lethargy is.
To make matters worse, many people are unknowingly dehydrating themselves.
So, without further ado, here are some things that can cause dehydration that usually stay under the radar:
1. Natural teas in loose leaf form: Loose leaf teas are much stronger than their bagged counterparts. And just because they don't cause energy crashes doesn't mean that they can't dehydrate you. In fact, because teas increase blood flow I believe they can dehydrate you very quickly when taken in large amounts.
2. An increase in non exercise activity: Just because you aren't sweating doesn't mean you aren't losing water. You see, you lose water through respiration and mild perspiration that you can't really detect. And simply moving around more will cause you to lose a lot of water.
3. Low doses of caffeine: Here is the deal with caffeine, just because you don't feel it doesn't mean it's not dehydrating you. You see, your body gets used to caffeine's stimulation very quickly. Unfortunately, it doesn't get used to its dehydrating effects.
4. Big meals: Your digestive tract requires lots of water in order to digest food. So if you have a day of big eating you need to drink lots of water. Also, if you decide to increase caloric intake for weight gain make sure you increase water intake as well.
5. Improper re-hydration: There are two times when you are really dehydrated, when you wake up in the morning and immediately after exercise. The main issue here is that your drive to drink may not be sufficient for your level of dehydration.
6. Not having water at your rapid disposal: If you don't have it close by you are probably not going to drink it. So make sure you have fresh and cold water at arm's length as much as possible. You see, by decreasing your barriers to fresh water, you increase the chances that you will properly hydrate.
